Better together: UN Resident Coordinators working together across the globe
This week the Secretary-General has convened a Global Meeting with 130 Resident Coordinators, who lead our UN teams across the globe. In a series of virtual meetings with our top leadership, including UN entity chiefs, the focus has been on helping countries accelerate action to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals in this Decade of Action.
The Secretary-General thanked Resident Coordinators for the work to implement the reform while tackling an unprecedented pandemic, bringing the UN together to deliver on the socioeconomic response to COVID-19. He flagged the urgency to boost climate action, vaccine distribution and tackle increasing inequalities, and consolidating UN reform — in development and humanitarian contexts alike.
The Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and Resident Coordinators exchanged ideas and solutions on how Resident Coordinators can summon the full force of UN’s assets to increase ambition, scale and pace of support to sustainable development.
Over 90 per cent of host governments in countries we serve found that UN Resident Coordinators ensured a coherent UN response with the UN being more relevant to their development needs, with 77 per cent of governments also perceiving that the UN works better together now than it did before the reforms in 2018*.
Over the course of this week Resident Coordinators will continue to engage with a range of UN leaders to tackle the challenges of the pandemic, including around labour markets, the impact and role of women, while boosting climate change adaptation, mitigation and financing for the SDGs.
